The EGR Cooler body is situated just below and slightly to the right of the yellow dipstick holder shown in the picture below. The first thing is to ensure there is plenty of light! Also place a large drip tray under the car, the under tray will get in the way here, so be quick when coolant gushes out.
I asked the mechanic to give me the fault code - he said there is LOTS of them- I have just the first four: B1445 Control Module Voltage Output Circuit. B2585 Park Lamps Control Circuit. B260B Left Daytime Running Lamp Relay Control Circuit. B260C Right Daytime Running Lamp Relay Control Circuit. B2610 Passenger Compartment Dimming*1 Circuit.
Any way you look at it, a diesel truck emitting black smoke is not going to be getting the optimal fuel mileage it should be getting. Most common causes of black smoke are faulty injectors, a faulty injector pump, a bad air filter (causing not enough oxygen to be supplied), a bad EGR valve (causing the valves to clog) or even a bad turbocharger.

I would also advise you to remove and clean the pipe on the left in the picture, it has 3 x 10mm bolts holding it to the manifold at the top and 2 x 5/6mm allen key bolts at the base, the end which goes into the manifold will be jammed solid with carbon/soot, dont loose the O ring at the top or the metal gasket at the base.. i have never removed the valve itself, just cleaned this pipe.
